1. Pinpoint your personal taste. The entryway is the first thing you see when walking into your home and you want to make sure it creates a pleasant and calming feeling. This wallpaper from Anthropologie is definitely a personal choice, as everyone may not want their entryway to look so girlie, but since it’s against a singular wall, it provides a much needed pop of color against white furniture without overwhelming the rest of the house (see another look with this wallpaper here).
2. Play around with textures and patterns. If you’re unsure of what to do with the bare wall next to your front door, try adding dimension to the space by filling it with eye-catching pieces that won’t clutter the entryway area. A simple acrylic coffee table like this one from CB2 will provide the basis for decorating while being light and airy. Topped with an eye-catching lamp or flower vase, it can be the perfect addition to creating a welcoming entryway.
3. Don’t be afraid of colors. This definitely has to be the hardest rule for me to follow because I always second guess myself on whether a bold color will be “too much” in a certain space and every time I go for it, it adds a much needed warmth and personal touch to the space. It can be as simple as a stack of colorful books or candles.
4. Keep the clutter to a minimum. There’s nothing like stepping in the door and tripping over something the minute you walk in. If you don’t have enough space to decorate, opt for pictures, a colorful rug, or a hanging light fixture.
5. Make sure your entryway is cohesive with the rest of the house. Believe me, it’s easy to get carried away and want to experiment with another theme, but the entryway sets the precedent for the rest of the house.
6. Rugs are your friend! I’m not talking about door mats either. Often times entryways can lead right into the living room (like at my apartment) so in order to map off that section of the house, a rug can be a great divider.
I just discovered furbishstudio.com and it’s an amazing site for entryway decor!
